Third Night of Riots in France
Muslim immigrants and extreme-left activists rioted for a third night in France in response to Nicolas Sarkozy’s victory in the presidential elections. Hundreds of rioters gathered in Bastille square in Paris and attempted to block access to passersby. The group shouted slogans referring to Sarkozy as a fascist, set several cars on fire, broke windows, and looted two stores.
Police said that the Tuesday night riots were much weaker than riots on the two previous nights. Two police officers were injured by rioters throwing rocks and bottles on Tuesday, as opposed to 78 on Sunday. Rioters set fire to dozens of cars on Tuesday night, fewer than the 365 cars destroyed on Monday night and the 730 set on fire on Sunday night.
