Cabinet Okays Funding Proposal for Alternative Schools

The cabinet approved a bill Sunday that will force local governments to fund non-public schools, brushing aside protests from Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and Education Minister Yuli Tamir.

The bill proposed by Shas Minister Meshulam Nahari would provide funding for schools in the Orthodox Agudath Israel, Degel HaTorah and Shas Ma’ayan HaChinukh systems, as well as the non-religious Democratic school system.

If passed, the law would mandate parity in funding for state-controlled and independently-run school systems.
