The Higher Monitoring Committee of Israeli Arabs – a committee made up of the Arab Israeli public's leading figures – has published a clarification regarding a document it drew up in December 2006, called "The Future Vision for Palestinian Arabs in Israel." A translation oversight, the HMCIA stated Friday, is what caused the document to include several inflammatory phrases, including a statement that Israel was created through "colonialist action."
The original document was drawn up by Dr. Asad Ghanem, explained the committee's chairman, Shauki Khatib. Most of the committee's members wanted the word "colonialism" dropped, and replaced with "settlement." The change was indeed made – but not in the translation into Hebrew.
Some of the commission's members call this a "fatal mistake," that has made dialogue with the Jewish public difficuilt.
