The United Nations Security Council has expressed concern over arms smuggling from Syria into Lebanon, a practice prohibited by the Council's ceasefire Resolution 1701 but which U.N. Interim Forces In Lebanon (UNIFIL) said at the outset said they would not implement.

The Security Council now has authorized a mission to determine how the border with Syria is being monitored. However, it also reiterated concern over Israel's air surveillance, conducted to monitor and report on the arms smuggling.

Concerning kidnapped IDF soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, the Council issued another statement calling for their return, as is stated in a non-binding clause in the ceasefire resolution. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accepted the ceasefire after backing down from his original position that the war would continue until the two soldiers were returned safely.
