    Holocaust Survivors Protest Opposite Knesset

A group of Holocaust survivors, students, and members of youth movements is holding a protest opposite the Knesset on Monday afternoon. The group is protesting the financial hardships faced by many survivors, and is calling on the government to provide more aid. Following the protest near the Knesset, the group plans to march to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum.

Officials estimate that 80,000 Holocaust survivors, almost one-third of the survivors living in Israel, are poor. Approximately 90% of the 80,000 are immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and are not eligible for German compensation through the State of Israel. The compensation money that some receive from the Finance Ministry is only 1,040 shekels a month, and for many does not cover their growing medical costs.
