Defense Minister Amir Peretz angrily rejected accusations on Wednesday that his order to expel Jews from a recently purchased building in Hevron is connected to his campaign to retain leadership of the Labor party. The party will vote next month on challenges by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Knesset Member Ami Ayalon to replace the former national labor union as Labor chairman.

In an interview on Voice of Israel government radio, he charged his questioners and the media in general with conducting a cynical campaign against him. Critics have charged that he ordered the expulsion in order to gain party support.
