MK Effie Eitam (NRP-NU) said on Saturday night that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had promised to prevent the eviction of Jews living in the Peace House in Hevron, after the IDF had determined that the building was legally purchased by Jews. The promise was made about a week ago during a meeting between Olmert, Eitam and Interior Minister Roni Bar-On, at which Olmert told Eitam that he would prevent the evictions, being pushed by Defense Minister Amir Peretz, if it turned out that the building belonged to Jews.
Eitam told Olmert that evicting the building's Jewish residents would be a blow to justice and the right of Jews to live in any part of Eretz Yisrael. "You cannot allow Peretz to cause an uproar over internal Labor Party issues, specifically his attempts to look good for voters in party primaries," Eitam said, adding that he was sure that Olmert would keep his promise.
