A source in the Palestinian Authority said on Saturday night that terrorist groups were demanding no fewer than 1,300 terrorists in exchange for kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. A large number of the terrorists, many of whom have been serving long terms in Israeli prisons for their crimes, have "blood on their hands." In the past, Israeli governments have refused to release such prisoners,
Among those whose release is being demanded is Marwan Barghouti, serving five life sentences for his role in the murder of more than 30 Jews. Also on the list is Ahmed Sa'adat, among those awaiting trial for the murder of Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi in 2001.
Israeli sources in Jerusalem confirmed that a list of terrorists whose freedom was being demanded in exchange for Shalit had been submitted to Israel. and that while "some" progress had been made in negotiations, there was still a long way to go.
