(IsraelNN.com) Approximately 50,000 people took part in holiday prayers at the Kotel (Western Wall of the Temple) on Thursday morning, and were blessed by hundreds of Kohanim, members of the priestly family. The mass blessing was instituted 36 years ago by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Gefner, and takes place twice a year, on the Pesach (Passover) and Sukkot holidays.

Following the blessings, Chief Rabbis Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzgar led prayers for the return of Israel’s kidnapped and missing soldiers, for an end to the frequent and often fatal traffic accidents throughout the country, and for the security of Israel. They then remained along with Kotel Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch to greet the public and to grant individual blessings to the thousands who stayed to meet them.
