IDF Commander Caused Sabbath Violations Reported: 08:28 AM - Apr/05/07
(IsraelNN.com) A junior IDF commander ordered a training exercise on the Sabbath, contrary to army policy that prohibits such training in order to not violate the Sabbath. Jewish law does allow, and even requires, soldiers to be deployed on the Sabbath when there is an immediate security need.
Channel 10 television reported that the soldiers were sent on the Sabbath because of a possible incident on the Lebanese-Israel border. The commander then ordered a training exercise for the soldiers, most of whom observe Jewish laws. The soldiers refused to follow the orders, which were against army policy, and the commander threatened to quit because of what he called a breach of trust by his troops.
