The Foreign Ministry found itself in an embarrassing position Tuesday after British Deputy Consul-General Janet Rogan was strip-searched before being allowed to enter the Prime Minister’s Office Tuesday.
An apology was immediately issued after the incident, which occurred despite Ms. Rogan’s submission of her diplomatic credentials to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s security detail.
Ms. Rogan, one of the top British diplomats in Israel, refused to subject herself to a physical security check. The situation deteriorated into a verbal clash which ended with the diplomat being forced to cooperate with the search, which included having to raise her shirt. Prime Minister Olmert expressed outraged at the event and has demanded an internal investigation into the incident.
