Ethiopia to Close Gundar Aliyah Camp (IsraelNN.com) Ethiopian officials plan to close an Aliyah camp in the Gundar region. The camp serves as a temporary home for members of the Falashmura, Ethiopians with Jewish roots whose ancestors converted to Christianity approximately 100 years ago. The Falashmura wish to return to Judaism and immigrate to Israel, and camp workers try to prepare them for life after immigration.
The government issued an order to close the camp following complaints from Christians in the region who oppose the camp’s activities. The Ethiopian government has previously expressed concern that the mass exodus of Ethiopian citizens to Israel will cause a lack of stability. Camp workers expressed confidence that the order would be canceled, and said they plan to continue work as usual. ![]() Sign up to receive the Daily Israel Report by email (Free) © IsraelNN Syndications - This article may not be republished freely.
