The Palestinian Authority government knows who kidnapped British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reporter Alan Johnston on Monday, according to Hamas government spokesman Ghazi Hamad.

“This issue is on its way to being solved, G-d willing,” Hamad told the Reuters news service Tuesday afternoon. “We have definitely information regarding the parties behind this kidnapping.”

The Scottish national was pulled from his car near his Gaza City apartment by four masked gunmen who forced him into a white vehicle and drove off. He is believed to be the only Western journalist still based full time in Gaza, after journalists from the Associated Press, Fox News Network and the French AFP news service were kidnapped last year.

The BBC issued a statement saying it still has no confirmation on Johnston’s whereabouts.
