The book 'Perfidy,' written by renowned playwright and Jewish activist Ben Hecht in 1961 has been made available in its entirety online.
The book was banned in Israel for its harsh accusations against the early Labor-Zionist leaders, including Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion. It recounts the libel trial of a journalist who exposed Jewish Agency official Rudolph Kastner's coordination with the Nazis to rescue 288 Jews from his hometown of Kluj in return for the deception of the remaining 800,000 Jews of Hungary and his subsequent testimony on behalf of an SS official in Nuremberg after the Holocaust.
Though seen as one of the factors that brought Menachem Begin and the right-wing to power over the ruling left, the book has remained scarce. Its uncited assertions, ironically, were later documented through the work of left-wing New Historian Tom Segev, in his book 'The Seventh Million.' Segev had access to Israel's state archives and published the findings with the goal of proving that Israel's founding fathers, particularly Ben-Gurion, were tarnished by misdeeds.
