Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday that Israel supports the idea of a summit to discuss the merits of the 2002 peace plan formulated by Saudi Arabia. Olmert told the weekly Cabinet meeting, “We have said more than once that the Saudi initiative is a matter which we would be ready to treat seriously – and we have not altered our position.”

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said last week that Israel could not support the plan in its present form and indicated that the major point of contention was the condition that Arabs who fled Israel during the 1948 war and those that followed, as well as all their descendants be allowed to return to Israel.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Saturday that the plan could not be altered or changed in any way and called for Israel to examine it further before rejecting the plan.
