King Abdullah Pleas to Congress for Peace
King Abdullah II of Jordan, in a rare appearance before the American Congress, appealed to the American government to lead Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) into an era of peace. The King also appealed for concern for the "Palestinian people" who have experienced "60 years of Palestinian dispossession." He asserted that their situation is the underlying reason for violence.
Congressmen responded faintly to the plea for PA Arabs, who were under the rule of Jordan in 1967 and had local self-government outside of military matters under Israeli administration until the Tunisia-based Palestine Liberation Organization led the first Intifada in the late 1980s.
"Thirteen years ago, my father was here to talk about his hopes for peace," he told the Congress. "The next time a Jordanian, a Palestinian or an Israeli comes before you, let it be to say, 'Thank you for helping peace become a reality.' Help fulfill the aspirations of Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace today."
