The army recorded a record number of indictments against Arabs living in Palestinian Authority controlled areas in 2006. The 3,523 indictments ranged in severity from rock attacks on soldiers and civilians to murder. The increase reflects a rise in the number of terrorist attacks and attempted attacks on Jews, mostly in the Judea and Samaria regions.
The number of crimes committed by PA Arabs with Arab victims increased as well. There was a 50% increase in murder cases, with most of the murders resulting from feuds between clans. The number of ‘honor’ killings rose as well, with more women murdered for perceived stains on their families’ reputation.
According to the report, more than 3,500 indictments were handed down, although at least half were changed during the year and 5 percent were cancelled altogether.
There was also a sharp rise in the number of administrative injunctions – more than 1,000, as opposed to only 26 issued during the year 2000.
