Jordanian King Abdullah II said in an interview with Israeli Channel 2 TV Saturday that he believes the Palestinian Authority unity government must accept the Quartet demands if it is to advance negotiations with Israel.

“There is international common ground,” the Hashemite monarch said in the interview, “not just Western but also Arab and to a certain extent Muslim – that believe there have to be certain criteria that the new government has to accept if we’re going to move the process forward.”

The comments were the first indication from an Arab leader that there is a limit to the patience of the PA’s Arab benefactors with the Hamas faction’s intransigence on Quartet demands, refusing to recognize Israel, renounce violence and fulfill agreements signed by the previous PA government.

The Quartet is comprised of the U.S., Russia, the European Union and the United Nations.
