Intelligence: Low Probability for War in 2007

Reported: 10:02 AM - Feb/23/07

(IsraelNN.com) The annual intelligence report to be presented to the government Sunday estimates there is a "low probability" for war in 2007. The report is a joint compilation by Israel's three main intelligence arms: Military Intelligence (MI), the Mossad and the General Security Service (GSS), or Shabak.

However, there appear to be conflicting opinions on this matter in Israel's intelligence community. Brig. Gen Yosi Baidatz, head of MI's Research Department, said this week that Hizbullah's military strength was greater today than it was on the eve of the fighting in Lebanon in July 2006. Baidatz also told the Knesset that "in our estimate, the Syrians are preparing for the possibility of war in the region, perhaps through a provocation by a third party."

Experts say the Mossad sees Syrian President Bashar Assad's apparent peace overtures as an act of deception, while MI thinks Assad may mean what he says.
