An Iranian government spokesman told reporters at a news conference Sunday that the Islamic Republic will ignore a deadline to end its nuclear development program. “Suspension is unacceptable,” said spokesman Mohammed Ali Hosseini. “There are no grounds to do that. This issue belongs to the past,” he said.

The February 21 deadline to halt Iran’s uranium enrichment program is the second one set by the United Nations Security Council within the past 12 months.

Iran also ignored the original deadline, August 31, 2006, after which the world body said it would impose sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Limited sanctions were finally imposed only a few weeks ago.
