(IsraelNN.com) Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz met Monday evening and agreed to appoint Major General Gabi Ashkenazi as the next Chief of Staff. The appointment will be officially announced later in the evening, after Peretz speaks with Generals Benny Gantz and Moshe Kaplinski. The government is expected to approve the appointment early next week.
The previous Chief of Staff, Dan Halutz, resigned last Tuesday night after an IDF investigation criticized his actions in the Second Lebanon War. Halutz insisted on stepping down last week, despite requests that he stay in his position until after the Winograd Commission releases its latest findings.
