This past week 50 of the Nation's Republican Security Officials formerly aligned with George W. Bush signed a letter declaring that Donald J Trump "lacks the character, values, and experience" to be President. An internecine attack of this kind is unheard of in American Politics.

It is the first time in my lifetime that a former President (even though he himself and his Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice did not sign on) essentially endorsed the candidate from the other Party. The letter did mention that Americans "have doubts about Hillary Clinton, as do many of us" so it may be somewhat of an overstatement to say they endorsed her but the effect is the same. Sometimes smart people cannot see the forest from the trees. I believe this is an example of that phenomenon. As long as the gloves are off I thought it would be reasonable to analyze what went right and what went wrong during the George W. Bush years. Unlike his father he was a two term President.

This is a major accomplishment. The American People supported his invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan as evidenced by the fact that he beat John Kerry who was anti-war stemming from his days in Vietnam when he turned against that war. George W. Bush won decisively in 2004. The invasion of Iraq took place in 2003. George W. Bush was a great friend of Israel. He treated Israel as an ally. He had a great deal of respect for Israel's high tech industry and their military. He was there for Israel when they needed him. This was the case in the War against Hezbollah in 2006. These are truly high points for George W. Bush's Presidency. At this juncture I will try to identify some of the problems that no doubt had a lot to do with the 50 Signatories on this letter against Donald Trump. The 50 Signatories thought that one could invade Iraq, get rid of Saddam Hussein and everything would be fine and dandy. Their understanding of the Muslim World was at best naive and at worst foolhardy. They were not alone.

The West never understood the Arab World and to this day still does not understand the Arab World. In truth Donald Trump understands the Islamic Threat better than these Signatories. Unless a substantial continued American Troop presence remained in Iraq , the most violent Muslim group was inevitably going to rise to the top. Once America decided to invade Iraq it had to be prepared for the long haul. If it was not prepared to go in for a minimum of ten to twenty years it should not have gone in at all. I believe this is what Donald Trump means when he opposed the Iraq War. Unless one was prepared to remain in Iraq for 10 to 20 years then the risks including the loss of American GI's, instability created, decreasing the deterrence to Iran outweigh the benefits of getting rid of an evil Tyrant-Saddam Hussein. Because of the Iraq invasion other damaging phenomena occurred including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's terrible decision to expel 10,000 Jews from Gaza living in 22 beautiful cities as part of the so called "the Gaza Disengagement in 2005. I said it then and I will say it now.

Ariel Sharon did this partially as payback for George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq. I am not saying that George Bush asked for this or even pushed this idea. However, George W Bush was always worried about the moderate Arabs like the Saudis and Kuwaitis reactions to events in the Middle East. The Gaza Disengagement was Sharon trying to help Bush balance the invasion of Iraq with the emotions throughout the Arab World. Even Bush's misguided insistence on a so called two state solution was to appease the moderate Arab World. One of the worst decisions ever by a Prime Minister of Israel I believe came about  partially because of the Iraqi invasion.

The Gaza Disengagement was also done by Ariel Sharon because President Bush was indeed pushing very hard for a two state solution(Condoleeza Rice was at the forefront). Sharon reasoned that he could buy time from the Bush Administration before the Administration imposed a two state solution. No matter how you slice it one of the most traumatic events in Israel's brief modern history occurred during the George W. Bush years. The 50 Signatories on this letter attacking Donald Trump better take a hard look at what they were responsible for. As smart as they are they made mistakes. I think they are too smart for their own good.
