Last week I was walking with friends in the so-called Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem (rightfully should be called the Old Jewish Quarter because Jews used to make up the majority prior to Pogroms of 1929 and 1936) and Hamas flags were flying high but so were ISIS flags.

They were later removed. ISIS has become the latest "darling" of the Arab Street. Hamas still carries significant sway but ISIS has captured the minds and hearts of the Arab World. The fact that Hamas can parade around and keep on smiling despite surrendering with white flags blazing boggles the mind. For Ismail Haniya to "emerge buoyant despite bloodshed and devastation" as the New York Times framed it says volumes about the type of enemy both Hamas and ISIS represent. Both groups thrive on martyrdom.

They rejoice in death and destruction. They romanticize death. Their mindset is not that of the West's. They do not think like an American. Embarrassment to them is worse than death. Sensationalism is their bread and butter. Media attention is their life blood. The more media the more power.ISIS has grabbed the headlines by their barbaric and savage actions. If the media would stop covering them the beheadings would stop. The media has responsibilities that it never seems to recognize or acknowledge.

No one has made the point that the media could be helpful if they simply got out of the way. Unfortunately, the Internet has compounded the problem since it has empowered the Terrorists of the world and made the media much less disciplined than in previous eras.

In order for the world to confront the threat of Hamas and ISIS the media has to really do a tremendous amount of introspection. It is up to the President of the United States and the Leader of the Free World to do the rest.
