There are three important details of the latest attack by terrorists in Jerusalem that must be highlighted.

They are glossed over and often overlooked in the general media. The first is that the terrorists Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Jabareen, Mohammed Hamed Abd Al-Latif Jabareen, and Mohammed Ahmed Fadel Jabareen were Israeli Arabs from Umm al-Fahm in Northern Israel near Haifa.

It is much harder fighting terrorists who are citizens of Israel who can travel anywhere in Israel with impunity. This is true of homegrown terrorists anywhere in the world and currently is the main problem facing law enforcement today. The second point is that the use of modified automatic weapons represents a major escalation of terror. The Arab terrorists in Israel had been using primarily knives and car rammings in their attacks. That is no longer the case. It has implications for law enforcement the world over.

The use of Carl Gustav or "Carlo" submachine guns-crudely manufactured in metal shops in Arab villages is a worrisome and dangerous escalation of both tactics and methods by the terrorists. The Carl Gustav which is modeled after the Swedish version of the 1950's is relatively cheap and now being produced in much greater quantities than heretofore. The Carl Gustav weapons were used in an attack on Israeli soldiers near Hebron at the entrance to Kiryat Arba in March 2016 and again in the attack in which Staff Sgt. Hadas Malka was killed at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem in June 2017. The terrorists in Israel have become more brazen.

Copycats around the world have taken notice. The use of automatic weapons in Israel by terrorists means that security services around the globe have to be more alert and vigilant than ever before. The third overlooked point is that the three terrorists who killed Staff Sgt. Major Haiel Sitawe and Staff Sgt. Kamil Shnaan (the son of former Likud MK Shakib Shnaan) used the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount as their staging area and weapons depot. It further implicates the Waqf and the PA who oversee the Temple Mount as aiding and abetting the terrorists.

The three murderers could not have done it alone. There has to be a true zero tolerance for terrorism both in words and deeds. Words of condemnation are important but words alone will not cut it. Terrorism must end plain and simple.
