Memo to Israel: Put faith in G-d and yourselves, not the USA

"It is incredible what political simpletons Jews are. They shut their eyes to one of the most elementary rules of life,

The well-connected machers all describe themselves as "Zionists" to keep themselves in the game.

that you must not 'meet halfway' those who do not want to meet you." (Ze'ev Jabotinsky: The Ethics Of The Iron Wall (1923))

Here in the USA, the Jewish leadership is reliving the 1930s and early 40s with the descendants of that shameful era reprising the roles of their predecessors. It must be a communicable disease or something in their DNA.

This time around their "Jewish problem" is Israel, so the well-connected machers all describe themselves as "Zionists" to keep themselves in the game. (Better to see you with, my dear.) But the objective hasn't changed - prove to the gentile establishment (and Obama) that they are just "one of the boys." Oh yes, there was a short plantation revolt recently after Obama scared the servants and temporarily lost his temper and self-control. But the uprising was quickly put down by a presidential pat on the head. Now it's back to business as usual.

As has been widely reported in the media, clotheshorse and terrorist mouthpiece Mahmoud Abbas hosted a dinner with a Jewish star-studded group of "pro-Israel" Jewish leaders on his swing through Washington, D.C. earlier this month. (For news article on the subject, click here).  Finally, Jews have discovered the exception to Eban's rule that the "Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity". Here's the one "Palestinian" who doesn't miss an opportunity.

The event gave Abbas an opening to whisper sweet nothings into the ears of his adoring guests who represented the gamut of mainstream Jewish opinion from liberal to conservative with Soros's representative from J Street thrown in to add a dash of exotic leftwing spice.

True to form, our "leaders'" reactions to Mahmoud's spiel fit their molds precisely, ranging from gushing endorsement ("unequivocal rejection of violence....a powerful statement") from Robert Wexler on the liberal end to polite skepticism ("an appealing person... but Abbas' comments lacked substance") from Elliot Abrams on the right. Again, it can't be emphasized too strongly that those who broke bread with Abbas are not outliers. They reflect the spectrum of opinions found among the rank and file of engaged Jews in America.

In fairness, it needs to be stressed that Israel itself has given this crew of the self-anointed ample cover and street cred for their mission. You can't be more Catholic than the Pope or more of a Zionist than the leaders of Israel who are, to a man, still in Oslo's orbit. Simply put, there is no chance American Jews will find their spine until Israel's leaders find one of their own.

Still, the pity of it all is that no amount of bitter Jewish experience has prepared any of our sophisticated Jewish rubes for a natty Arab who lies to them through his teeth. The tragedy of it all is they have become the approving Jewish patrons of a magic show whose illusions are slowly pushing Israel into the ground. And the irony of it all is that Israel's own devotion to "the peace process" gives America's "communal leaders" all the aid and comfort they need.

Ed. note:

On Wednesday, June 30, Abbas told an interviewer that he doesn't actually deny the Holocaust occurred (although that denial was the subject of his doctoral thesis), and that he condemns it, but doesn't know how many Jews were killed, suggesting 6000 as a possible number.
