Some Principles and Imperatives of a Jewish Foreign Policy

First, Israel, the teacher of ethical monotheism is supposed to set an example to mankind. Therefore, Israel should not establish diplomatic relations with any tyrannical regime. To do so is to dignify tyrants and perpetuate their unjust rule over their people.

Courting tyrannies demeans Israel and lowers the moral standards of the Jewish people. The establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt, a military dictatorship, was followed by an increase of anti-Semitism in Egypt's state-controlled media.

Second, Israel should recall its ambassador from any state whose government fosters anti-Semitism.

Third, the government should stop relying on the United States to play the role of the anything-but-"honest-broker" in Israel-Arab affairs.

Fourth, Israel's government should demand the immediate release of its agent, Jonathan Pollard (of whom, more below).

Fifth, the government should reveal the extent to which the US is dependent on Israeli science, high-tech industries, medical discoveries and intelligence services.

Sixth, the government should notify the US that Israel will terminate in stages American transfer payments, i.e., military and economic assistance.

Seventh, the government should resume development and production of an Israeli fighter aircraft by reducing taxes on the one hand and eliminating outrageous tax-evasion on the other.

Eighth, the government should notify the US to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem or have none at all.

Ninth, consistent with Jewish law, Israel will not export arms to any foreign nation except under extreme circumstances. Generally speaking, international arms sales promote war, sustain tyrannies and impoverish people.

Tenth, given weapons of mass destruction, no nation can afford to wait to be attacked before it retaliates. Accordingly, Israel will pursue a preemptive war strategy. This accords with Jewish law.

Finally, Israel's government will comport itself in such a way as to enhance the dignity of the Jewish people and sanctify the name of God.

To this end, I must again refer to Jonathan Pollard. Jonathan's bondage in America is a reflection of Israel's bondage to America. His physical incarceration - now in its twentieth year - is indicative of Israel's spiritual incarceration.

Clearly lacking in this so-called Jewish state is Jewish national honor, and for this, we may thank the decrepitude of Israeli prime ministers and the virtual silence of too many rabbis. Do not expect any restoration of Jewish national honor until the government of Israel vigorously, vehemently and vocally demands Jonathan's release.

But if this is too much to expect from politicians, then I want to see 100 Israeli rabbis go to Washington and publicly declare that they, and not Israel's pusillanimous government, represent the Jewish people. I want them to see the president of the United States, not to indulge in sentimental appeals, but to tell Mr. George Bush that it is his sacred duty, as a Christian whose Christianity stands on the Bible of Israel, to return Jonathan, a son of the Jewish people and a citizen of Israel, to his homeland.
