The Syrian SANA news agency reported this week on Bashar al-Assad?s new Presidential gun control decree.

The decree, Number 51 of 2001, limits the manufacture and maintenance of weapons, ammunition and fire crackers to governmental bodies. It further establishes that only Arabs will be able to obtain weapons licenses. Recipients must also be healthy Syrians of twenty-five years of age, who are resident in the country and free of a criminal record.

The decree also limits even those licensed weapons from being carried ?in courtrooms, conferences, public meetings, airports, seaports, sport fields and clubs save those whose job necessitates otherwise.? While archaeological weapons need not be licensed, they are still not allowed to be carried.
