Op-Ed: J'Accuse: Western Academics Who Condemn Israel
They are the West’s equivalent of suicide (or really, homicide) bombers.
These are the professors and activists who are, essentially, anti-American in their point of view and who, like President Obama (who studied with them), want a de-militarized and diminished America. The 21st century manifestation of this sentiment in academia is the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, whose aim is to starve the Israeli government by bullying even further already indoctrinated academics, artists, and businessmen into not working in Israel and/or into covering the news in only a pro-Hamas and pro-Palestinian way.
Once, when they were younger, some supported the American civil rights movement—as I, too, did; were opposed to the Vietnam War—which I, too, once was; and they supported the overthrow of the American government (by any means possible). That’s where they lost me. I had escaped from Kabul, Afghanistan where I was held hostage to an Afghan husband and I knew that America was the best country on earth.
Come to think of it, many of the leaders of what was once known as the Weather Underground not only taught President Obama, they became his closest friends. Of course, I am thinking of Williams Ayers. But there were so many others.
By the end of the 1970’s, Edward Said’s pro-Palestinianism and anti-Zionism as well asNoam Chomsky’s concepts of America as an evil, global corporate, imperial power had swept the American campuses. Curricula crafted by the United Nations, the Arab League, Soviet Russia, Western Marxist thinkers-- and funded by George Soros, the Ford Foundation, and the Arab League, etc.-- increasingly viewed Israel as the world’s worst moral offender with America a close second.
White men (and women) were also seen as the world’s worst offenders and feminist and gay professors bought right into the view that the most oppressed and noble people on earth were formerly colonized men (not women) of color. The highest pedigree possible belonged to that of Muslim men of color who were not seen as barbarians (especially if they were) but rather, as justified freedom fighters.
This educated ship of fools demands a proportionality in asymmetrical warfare that only means one thing: that not enough Jews are being killed. So far, no traditional army with men in uniform knows how to fight, according to Western rules of war, against combatants who are not in uniform, hide behind their own civilians, and hide their heaviest weaponry in schools, hospitals, and private homes; combatants who value death over life and who have made life a living hell for their own people.
Make no mistake: This bleating barnyard of sheep do not really care about Muslim deaths. They are silent as Muslims are slaughtering and butchering other Muslims all over the Middle East and the Islamic world. Muslim on Muslim violence does not “count,” nor does Muslim on Christian violence seem to affect them. On the contrary. They are long used to opposing Christianity as both misogynistic and conservative and, therefore, perhaps deserving of exile and horrible deaths in Iraq and elsewhere in the Islamic world.
They only howl in rage when Jews kill Muslim terrorists in self-defense and in defense of Israeli civilians.
I began tracking this suicidal and self-hating decline of the Western intelligentsia in 2000-2001. At first, I thought this was merely the betrayal of the truth and of the Jews—again, always again—by the educated classes. However, it became increasingly clear that this presumably anti-racist Jew hatred was but a part of a larger “death wish.” In the name of anti-colonial, anti-imperialist political correctness, the Western professors, Nobel Laureates, “peace” activists, artists, and authors inevitably favored Islamist terrorists—the new totalitarians—over and above Enlightenment values.
I know: They believed they were opposing South African-style apartheid, Nazi-style genocide, American-style slavery and anti-black racism. For them, Israel became the symbol for all these necessary hatreds. As in Orwell’s 1984, when Israel was mentioned, they all responded to Orwell’s fictitious “Goldstein” and called for blood. And blood they got.
For 13 ½ years, I have exposed this tragic distortion in thinking among Western “thinkers” as it has played out at countless rallies, riots, outright attacks, and resolutions to boycott and censure Israel. Earlier this month, July, 2014, several resolutions came my way, including one by the Critical and Ethnic Studies Association and by a new group: The International Coalition of Farmers and Fishermen. The usual suspects (Alice Walker, Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky, Ilan Pappe), signed yet a third Boycott and Condemnation of Israel even as Hamas rockets were raining down on Israel during cease-fires to which Israel had agreed.
Hamas, (think: The Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Hezbollah), began the war against the Jews long ago. Their charter clearly calls for the genocidal annihilation of Jews. They have taken all the billions sent their way by the West, the Arabs, the Iranians, and by world organizations and have not used the money to build a state for their people but used it to build an entire underground city of homicide tunnels in which they hide their arsenal of weapons and fighters. Their grand plan is brilliantly diabolical-- namely, to attack Israel, use their own civilians as human shields, and to then force Israel into a series of premature ceasefires by Hamas’s Western enablers, from President Obama to Secretary of State John Kerry on down. This, of course, includes the West’s Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions academic crew.
The Western academics are “merely” calling for the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the West Bank and Jerusalem—all the while accusing Israel of being the world’s greatest ethnic cleanser. Yes, Israel, which has 1.4 or more million Arab Israeli citizens, Christian, Druze, and Muslim.
If Western civilization continues to falter and ultimately fails the historical challenge upon us, I hold my (former) colleagues responsible for enabling this to happen.
Not on my watch, not if I can help it.
