Op-Ed: Europe: Suicide, Beheading - and a Whimper
Giulio MeottiThe writer, an Italian journalist with Il Foglio, writes a twice-weekly...
“I am healthy in body and mind, I am filled with love for my wife and children. However, in the evening of my life, facing immense dangers to my French and European homeland, I feel the duty to act as long as I still have strength. I believe it necessary to sacrifice myself to break the lethargy that plagues us (…) I rebel against fate. I protest against poisons of the soul and the desires of invasive individuals to destroy the anchors of our identity, including the family, the intimate basis of our multi-millennial civilization.
"While I defend the identity of all peoples in their homes, I also rebel against the crime of the replacement of our people.
" I apologize in advance to anyone who will suffer due to my death, first and foremost to my wife, my children, and my grandchildren, as well as my friends and followers. But once the pain and shock fade, I do not doubt that they will understand the meaning of my gesture and transcend their sorrow with pride. I hope that they shall endure together”.
This is the last message of Dominique Venner, the prominent French author and much-decorated Algerian war veteran who shot himself before the altar of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on May 21. It was the first time anyone had committed suicide within the 850-year-old landmark.
Venner was a foe of homosexual “marriage” - which was legalized in France - and believed in the threat of Islam to the French society. In Venner’s view, both issues were equally “disastrous” for France’s identity.
In 1981 his “Histoire de l’Armée Rouge” won a prestigious award from the Académie Française.
What is the meaning of Venner's tragic and symbolic suicide committed inside France’s most famous church?
A day after that tragically dramatic event, right in the middle of London, two Muslims beheaded a British soldier with a machete, the same kind of knife used in Rwanda for the genocide of the Tutsis.
Acording to the Times, Michael Adebolajo, who murdered a soldier in the heart of London, is in fact a convert to Islam. A month ago, a raid of the police and the intelligence services in Stratford, east London, led to the arrest of Richard Dart, another convert to Islam, son of two teachers.
A survey of inter-religious group Faith Matters revealed that the number of British citizens who have converted to Islam has exceeded the threshold of 100.000 and that there are up to 5.000 conversions each year. Shades of Richard Reid, the terrorist who wanted to blow up American Airlines flight 63 Paris - Miami with explosives hidden in his shoes, and who converted to Islam in a British prison.
In the bombings of 7 July 2005 there was also a convert to Islam, Germaine Lindsay, “a father and a loving husband”. When he blew up a bus in Kings Cross, his wife was expecting her second child. Germaine had just bought a car seat for the baby.
Close to 70 percent of these “new Muslims” are white and one of the reasons they give to explain their conversion is the “lack of morality” and the “sexual permissiveness” of British society. In a BBC broadcast, the terrorist Dart is filmed while denouncing British culture for becoming “more gay” with “men dressing like women”. The converts have declared war on Europe's decadence.
Many deadly terrorist plots against British targets have often been hatched with the participation of converts to Islam. Like Trevor Brooks, aka Abu Izzadeen, the son of Jamaican Christians, who three years ago instigated the “Group of Birmingham” to kidnap, torture and film the beheading of a British soldier.
Or Don Stewart-Shite, alias Abdul Waheed, who converted to the Koran and is the son of a member of the Conservative Party and of a fervent Christian Methodist, while his sister is advertising for Gucci. Neighbors described him as “a pleasant person”.
A suicide in a famous church of Paris and a beheading on a modern London, street, the self liquidation and the fanatical assassination. This is the double face of a lost continent.
The goal is to ensure that the “infidels” will leave the house every morning with the fear of not entering it again.
Venner's suicide and London's assassination are both symbols of the great loss of innocence and hope that characterizes the West under the mask of nihilistic divertissement.
Nihilism thrives in Europe, which has made a covenant with death. London's beheading is a declaration of war against modernity, secularism, rationality, democracy, individualism, universal human rights, promiscuity, materialism and Zionism.
The red book of these converts to Islam is titled “Edarat al-Wahsh”, which means "governing in a wild world". It advocates the creation in Europe of “parallel societies” next to the existing ones.
The goal is to ensure that the “infidels” will leave the house every morning with the fear of not entering it again. Non-Muslims will submit at the end: “The West has no stomach for a long fight”.
These two "dark" men, humorless, intense and rigid, Venner and the Nigerian Islamist, wrote the screenplay of Europe's existential condition.
We are living through the self-extinction of the civilization that shaped the age we live in.
But there is a third pièce of Europe's puzzle. The day after Venner shot himself dead inside the iconic Paris church building, a topless feminist activist held a fake gun in her mouth on the altar of Notre Dame cathedral, with the slogan "may fascism rest in hell" emblazoned across her bare chest.
To paraphrase T.S. Eliot: This is the way Europe ends - "not with a bang but a whimper".
