Eight people were killed and several others wounded in a ramming attack that occurred in the borough of Manhattan in New York City on Tuesday.

The attack occurred when a vehicle drove onto the bike lane in lower Manhattan, striking several cyclists. The driver was reportedly in possession of several fake guns.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov. Reports said he had been living in Tampa, Florida, and was originally from Uzbekistan.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio described the incident as a "cowardly terror attack".

President Donald Trump was briefed about the incident and later referred to it on Twitter as "another attack by a very sick and deranged person."

"Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!" he added.

According to CNN, ,the incident is being investigated as terrorism. One law enforcement source said the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is taking over the lead of the investigation.

One witness tweeted: “A car just ran over 2 people and then crashed into a school bus. I see two dead bodies and citibikes on the floor destroyed.”

“What happened was there was a car crash… he came out of one of the cars. He had two guns. He was running around Chambers and somebody started to chase him," Laith Bahlouli, 14, told the New York Post.

The NYPD asked pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area of Chambers Street and West Street, where the incident occurred. Police have closed the FDR Drive that runs north-south on the eastern side of Manhattan in both directions in order to rush victims to the hospital.
