A 27-year-old Jewish Canadian woman was stabbed overnight in Montreal, local media reports Wednesday.

Police were called to the scene of the attack at the intersection of Monkland and Girouard streets at around 12:45 p.m.

"When the police officers arrived at the scene they discovered a lady with upper body injuries. She got transported to the hospital [in critical condition]," Officer Benoit Boisella told CTV News.

The woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after suffering stab wounds to her upper body. Following emergency treatment, her condition stabilized.

Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for the brutal assault. He fled the scene but was caught with the help of a K-9 unit.

"The suspect left the scene before officers arrived, but the canine unit caught the guy and officers arrested him," Boiselle said.

No additional details have been released about the assailant or his motives. It is not clear if he knew the victim.

CIJnews reports the woman is a member of Canada's Jewish community and is married to an Israeli citizen. Members of the community have asked for prayers on behalf of the victim.
