Watch: 1,000 Attend Jewish-Christian Pro-Israel Rally in Mexico
More than 1,000 people gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Mexico City on Sunday, according to the Enlace Judío Spanish-language daily, to demonstrate in support of Israel and its self-defense operation in Gaza, Operation Protective Edge.
The rally was attended by Jews across the religious spectrum in Mexico, according to the daily, as well as Israeli Ambassador to Mexico, Rodica Radian-Gordon, Jewish Mexican leader and advertising executive Carlos Alazraki, and Samuel Coriat, president of Los Amigos de Israel ("Friends of Israel").
An Evangelical Christian delegation also attended the rally, led by Pastor Felipe Garcia, to provide a boost for Mexican Jewry at the demonstration.
"While Sunday for us is a sacred day, we went to show support for the Jewish people," Garcia stated.
Daniel Liwerant, an activist, spoke about the brotherhood between Huixquilucan (a district in Mexico city; full name Huixquilucan de Degollado) and Ashkelon, which has been hit particularly hard by rocket fire.
A planned visit by Mexican youth to stay in Ashkelon was cancelled as a result of the security situation, a fact which Liwerant noted brings the reality of the conflict closer to home.
Chabad representatives also attended, showing support for Israel and encouraging participants to put on tefilin (phylacteries) for Israel's safety.
