Cabinet in Midnight Meeting as Attacks Continue
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's cabinet of eight trusted ministers is to meet late Saturday night to discuss the ongoing attacks from Gaza. Hamas has declared open war and is allowing – and carrying out – frequent rocket attacks on southern Israel.
At least one person has been killed in the attacks and dozens wounded, two of whom are in critical condition.
Top IDF brass will be present at the midnight meeting as well, to give the military and intelligence perspective on events. Commanders will update the ministers on the latest incidents, and will take part in discussing various possible responses.
A senior political source was quoted by IDF Army Radio on Saturday as saying that the government hopes to avoid an operation in Gaza. However, the statement was made prior to the barrage of at least five Grad Katyusha missiles on Be'er Sheva that killed one and wounded several others.
MKs from the National Union (Ichud Leumi) party called Saturday for the government to stop acting defensively and start hitting Hamas. MK Aryeh Eldad suggested “taking out all the heads of Hamas, tonight. From Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashaal on down.”
Gaza terrorists have continued their attacks in recent hours, firing on several towns after hitting Be'er Sheva. No additional injuries have been reported.
