The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, will arrive in Israel Wednesday to participate in the farewell ceremonies from the outgoing IDF Chief of Staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, and the ceremony in which the new Chief of Staff, Major-General Benny Gantz, receives his new rank of Lieutenant General.

Mullen has met Chief of Staff Ashkenazi 17 time, five of them in Israel. The two have developed a bond of friendship. On Sunday, Mullen will hold a work meeting with Ashkenazi and later in the day, he will speak at the farewell event for Ashkenazi at Tel Aviv University.

On Monday, Mullen will hold a meeting with incoming Chief of Staff Gantz and then will be present at the ceremony in which Gantz officially becomes the new Chief of Staff.

Mullen and Gantz also know each other well, from the time that Gantz served as IDF Attache in Washington D.C.
