Lebanese officials told the Associated Press Monday that a colonel in the Lebanese army has been arrested on suspicion of spying for Israel. Another colonel was arrested on similar charges several days earlier.

Lebanon has arrested dozens of people suspected of spying for Israel in recent weeks. Over 20 have been charged with crimes. Lebanese officials say several suspects have confessed to the charges.

According to sources in Lebanon, at least two of the accused managed to flee to Israel with their families.

The crackdown on alleged spies began weeks before a hotly contested national election which will see the current government face off against the Hizbullah-led pro-Syrian minority bloc. Officials say the investigation into alleged Israeli spy cells will continue in the coming months.

Spy ring suspects who are convicted could face the death penalty. Lebanon is officially at war with Israel.
