About 450,000 residents of northern California began to lose electricity on Wednesday afternoon as the state's largest utility shut off power in an effort to avoid the risk of sparking wildfires amid dry and windy weather.
Pacific Gas & Electric said the preventive outages would affect nearly 180,000 residential and business customer accounts. The shutoffs will last about 48 hours.
