The Knesset has approved the first reading of a bill proposed by Knesset Member Eyal Ben-Reuven (Zionist Union), which requires each building site to appoint a safety assistant to assist the work manager in maintaining the safety of the site.
Referring to the construction accidents that prompted the measure, Ben-Reuven said, "We learned from the work managers that they are in distress and cannot fulfill their safety responsibilities because they have to fulfill other tasks, even though they are aware of the terrible price. In practice, the issue of safety has been marginalized in the order of priority. This proposal is one step in a series of steps taken and will be taken to combat this phenomenon."
