German Chancellor Angela Merkel wrote in the visitors' book at the end of her visit Thursday morning to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial institution in Jerusalem that 80 years ago, on the Kristallnacht of November, Jews in Germany suffered from hatred and violence that they never knew before.

She added that what happened next was an unprecedented crime - the breaking of civilization by the Holocaust. Since then Germany has a responsibility to remember this crime and to fight anti-Semitism, xenophobia, violence and hatred.
