Canada's Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has written to the country's chief electoral officer asking "to ensure that Canadian Jews’ right to vote is included," in light of the fact that the next federal elections are scheduled for Monday, October 21, 2019, coincides with the holiday of Shemini Atzeret.
In the letter, CIJA CEO Shimon Koffler Fogel notes, "Consequently, observant Jews will not avail themselves of the right to vote on that day," adding, "We do not yet know when the advance polling will take place, but some of those days may also fall on other important Jewish Holy Days...." The letter continues, "While making clear that we are not asking that the date of the election be changed, we request that your office give special consideration to this situation," and offers help "so that specific actions can be undertaken to accommodate those voters’ needs."
