Under a Chinese threat to eliminate takeoff and landing slots, El Al has removed the name Taiwan from its listing of flights to Taipei, according to Yediot Ahronot.
Korea took a similar step. Other airlines, under the same threat, have not eliminated the name Taiwan but have added the name China or used initials for Taiwan or added the initials CN for China next to Taiwan. Cathay Pacific did not yield at all. Taiwanese diplomats and Member of Knesset Nachman Shai (Zionist Union) protested El Al's decision. The airline has promoted tourism between Israel and Taiwan, which has grown in recent years.
