Professor Yuval Shany of the Faculty of Law of the Hebrew University was chosen yesterday to serve as Chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Committee in Geneva, the body that monitors compliance by the states with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It is not to be confused with the UN Human Rights Council or the UN Human Rights Commission.

The appointment of an Israeli to this senior position is an unprecedented achievement. Professor Shany is known for his expertise in humanitarian law and human rights, and since 2013 has been a member of the committee. He currently serves as vice chairman.
