Member of Knesset Dov Khenin (Joint List) has told Arutz 7 that the military draft law which passed its first reading in the Knesset, Monday evening, "is a bluff law that only fuels the politics of hatred, in which almost everyone in the political system wins, but the public loses. The law does not recruit yeshiva students and the army does not want to enlist the haredim, and the law will only remove many haredi youth from the labor market because they are required to study to prevent being drafted. This is a mechanism which harms society"

Noting other options for public service, Khenin added "I do not object to the value of Torah study. People who want to learn Torah should go to study Torah." He concluded, "Instead of making unrealistic and baseless laws, we must promote equality. Do not create a mechanism that will continue and deepen the discrimination and gaps in society."
