Member of Knesset Nachman Shai (Zionist Union) has sent a letter to Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, in which he requested that Member of Knesset Zeev Elkin be removed from the position of minister of Jerusalem affairs because of Elkin's bid for mayor of the city.
Shai wrote, "It is unthinkable that a minister holding a state position directly related to the city in which he intends to run will conduct direct political activity in the framework of his position in the government. As minister in charge of Jerusalem on behalf of the government of Israel, Minister Elkin has a center of significant influence that directly affects his future in the campaign for mayor. This is a clear conflict of interest."
