Ahed Tamimi trial starts behind closed doors

(AFP) - The trial of 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi of the Samarian Palestinian Authority village of Nabi Saleh, stemming from her hitting two Israeli soldiers as documented in a viral video, started on Tuesday behind closed doors in a military court near Jerusalem. The charges relate to events in the video and five other incidents and include stone-throwing, incitement and making threats.

The judge in the trial ruled that open proceedings would not be in the interest of Tamimi, who is being tried as a minor, even though previous hearings for the teenager were open. Her attorney argued unsuccessfully for the trial to be open. Tamimi's mother, Nariman, and cousin Nour, 20, are due to go on trial later in the day. It was not clear whether those proceedings would take place as planned.
