A tsunami warning is in effect for the west coast of North America, after a preliminary 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck 156 miles/250 kilometers southeast of Chiniak, Alaska, on Kodiak Island near the state's western peninsula.
Hawaii is also in the alert zone.
