Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit sharply criticized the new Basic Law: Legislation being promoted by Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and Education Minister Naftali Bennett.

"The meaning of the published draft stating that 61 MKs can establish a law bypassing the Supreme Court is the evisceration of the court's authority and its ability to fulfill its role as champion of the minority. It will curtail its ability to perform effective constitutional auditing and this could significantly harm Israeli democracy," Mandelblit said.

He added that if laws cancelled by the court could be passed by such a narrow minority, the court would not be able to protect human rights and the laws would harm the weakest parts of society who are most in need of constitutional protection.
