The Religious Affairs Ministry has rescinded the authority of the Chief Rabbinic Council regarding the appointment of city rabbis.

The ministry's move comes in response to a request by the council to summon the minister to explain the considerations of the ministry regarding election procedures for city rabbis.

In a unanimous decision the council with the participation of the chief rabbis decided to reject a request by the Religious Affairs Ministry to appoint new members to the election body

The council also wished to summon the minister to explain why some cities including large ones do not have even one rabbi and no elections are held, while in other cities with one rabbi the ministry wished to appoint a second rabbi.
