Acting chief commissioner of Victoria Police Shane Patton told reporters on Thursday there is no "evidence or any intelligence to indicate a connection with terrorism" in the wounding of 19 people by the driver of a sports utility vehicle in Melbourne Thursday afternoon.
Police said the 32-year-old driver is an Australian citizen of Afghan descent with a history of drug use and mental health issues, who was known to police but only for minor offenses. A second man arrested at the scene was not believed to be connected to the incident.
