Rabbi Eliyahu Bar-Shalom was chosen Tuesday as rabbi of the city of Bat Yam, after 19 members of the 32-member voting board supported his candidacy.
Rabbi Bar Shalom succeeds his father, Rabbi Yosef Bar-Shalom, who served for many years as the city's rabbi and passed away last year.
Chief Rabbi David Lau spoke with Rabbi Bar Shalom and blessed him "that he follow in his great father's footsteps and sanctify G-d's name in the city of Bat Yam.
