The Knesset held a special session marking 70 years since the UN decision to create a Jewish state in the land of Israel, in accordance with the initiative of opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog.
Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein said that "the celebrations in November 1947 were dampened by the shells of the enemy the same evening. Just as with the Balfour declaration 30 years earlier, the decision made in New York assembly rooms would have had no meaning if we hadn't implemented it on the battlefield.
"Today, 70 years later, the guns have yet to go silent but I think everyone opening his ears can hear the celebrations much louder now."
